Holden took his very first steps today!!!
I got a text message while at work from our daycare provider, Khatrina. She said, "Holden has taken steps for you, right? :/" and I said "No, Why?!?!" "....Well, he just took some for me." ........"OMG! Thats awesome!!! UGH I wish I could get off work RIGHT NOW!"
Being the wonderful daycare provider she is, she video taped it for us. I will post it as soon as I get it from her!
SO EXCITING!

Holden's One Year Stats
Height: 80th Percentile
Weight: 70th Percentile - 24 lbs
Walking: Not quite! Still cruising and "bear walking"
Words: He still says "mama" and "dada", not much else yet.
Other:
If you ask "Where's the light?" He points up to the ceiling at the light fixture.
If he doesn't want something, he will shake his head "no".
He can drink out of a sippy cup! (Has been able to for a while now. )
If you ask him to put an object in a box, he can do that.

Almost One!
I think normally most mom's are fervently tracking their little ones milestones. I am, but not so much in a written format. (Can you tell?) I do my best to try and update the blog with latest "Holden Happenings", but I just can't find the time to update two separate blogs.
I have to update now, though, considering my little baby boy will be ONE YEAR OLD in just a week! So here's the run down...
Mobility
He's crusing now, rather than crawling (although he still crawls for "long distance" mobility) and is beginning to start standing up on his own without grabbing on to anything! It's so cool to watch! He could walk if he wanted to, but it's almost like he doesn't have enough confidence in his legs. They are oh-so-strong though, and I wouldn't be surprised if in the next month he really starts to try walking.
Eating Habits
He would much rather have table food or what mommy and daddy are eating than pureed baby food. Can you blame him? So many times I tear up whatever I'm eating and feed it to him.
We just used the last of the formula, so it's whole milk from now on! He had absolutely no issues making the switch. The kid loves to eat, what can I say. Although it's very difficult to get him to actually sit still and eat it! He likes to eat "on the go" as my mom likes to say.
I need to let him experiment more with feeding himself. I've been somewhat reluctant to do it for fear of having to give him a bath after every meal!
Teeth
Holden now has (count 'em) 8 TEETH! Four on the top and four on bottom. I am increasingly afraid to stick my fingers in his mouth to retrieve whatever foreign "no no" he's shoved into it, lest he decide to bite me. They are all straight and evenly spaced, so mom says he will hopefully have great adult teeth!
Growth
At his 9 month appointment, he was 70% percentile for height and weight. I'm sure he weighs about 24 pounds now if not more, so I'll update again when I know what his stats are after his one year appointment.
Speech
He "talks" all the time. Just today Alex told me he was trying to say "cat". Apparently he couldn't quite say the "t", but he's working on it! He still says "mama" occasionally, but he doesn't quite make clear connections with objects verbally yet.
So there you have it. I am in denial that Holden is already a year old. It flew by so fast! We're having his birthday party next Sunday, so if you're reading and would like to come, e-mail me for details! ashleigh@ashleighthomson.com.

I'm Sorry.
...that I stink at keeping Holden's blog updated! Going back to work has left me with busy days, tired nights, (which I spend with Holden, not thinking about blogging) and weekends in which I want to spend as much time with Lex and Holden as possible! There is, of course, my own blog, which I update when I can, so if you'd like to keep up, be sure to visit.
Anyway, here is a run-down on Holden's milestones so far!
He will be 10 months old on May 8! So hard to believe my baby will be a year old in 2 months!
Mobility
He is crawling all over the place now, pulling himself up to stand on everything- the couch, the TV stand, peoples' pant legs, all of the above! One of these days he is just going to take off running! It's so amazing to watch him explore his surroundings. Seems like just yesterday he was getting so frustrated at trying to go forward and only scooting backwards!
After he started being able to scoot forward, it all happened one day as I was making dinner in the kitchen.... Alex and I were standing in the doorway watching him and Alex said "Look! That was a crawl!" Sure enough, he crawled forward a few steps. The rest is baby history!
Eating Habits
As always he is a great eater. Every time Lex is home with him on my lunch hour, he pulls himself up on the couch and wants to see/grab my lunch! So I feed him small bites of whatever it is I'm eating. Lately he hasn't wanted to eat as much solid food, though, and I suspect it is because he's teething.
He gets pieces of toast, cheerios, bananas, and Gerber Puffs. Sometimes we buy the little meals- i.e. pureed spaghetti and mac and cheese.
We asked the pedi if meat is necessary in his diet right now, and she said it is just important that he gets used to another type of protein outside of formula. So we have been feeding him chicken, beef, and turkey purees. At 11 months we can substitute whole milk for formula! Apparently any other type has too much salt and too little fat.
Teeth
A week ago he had a really runny nose and congestion. Our daycare provider called and said that he was running a slight temp (101) so I gave her the OK to give him some Tylenol. It came down and he was fine, but we took him to the pedi just in case. She said it was just due to teething. He has more teeth in addition to the 4 (2 top, 2 bottom) he already has in, so probably 5 or 6? What a big boy!
Growth
Speaking of big boys... Holden was in the 75% for weight and 70% for height at his 9 month appointment! So yes he has some chub, but all in all he's proportionate... and big! The DCP's daughter is 15 months and weighs just a pound more than him (he's 23lbs). So he is wearing 18month+ clothes and barely fitting into his 12 month outfits! We need to buy more!
Speech
Holden has been so much more vocal, especially since he started going to daycare. He babbles things like "bababa" and "mamama". Whether he associates this with "bottle" and "mama" I'm not sure, but it's still exciting to hear him say it!
So that's a summary of what little man has been up to! I will try and update more frequently! Thanks for reading!

Excited for First Easter!
If you haven't seen it over at my blog, Holden's Easter basket is finished and ready for the Easter bunny to come fill it with goodies!
I can't wait to take him home to Wichita next weekend. My mom and I are planning on taking him to Easter mass Sunday. It will be his first time in church, so I am hoping that he will be good! I imagine he will be; he loves being in public with lots of people to look at. Not to mention, he loves being held 24-7... which will make kneeling an issue, but I always hated that part anyway! :P
Not much in the way of milestones lately. We are still fervently encouraging him to crawl. He is up on his hands and knees 99% of the time when on the ground, and has even taken a few lurches forward, but he can't quite get moving. To be honest, I am not all too concerned that he hasn't started crawling yet- I have read about some babies either skipping crawling all together, or not doing it until 10 months. I look at it like this: he's only this little once and before too long, I won't be able to hold him! When he does decide to do it, he will have plenty of room (and carpet) to do it on thanks to this new wonderful house!
He knows how to wave, but hasn't done it lately. When he does, though, it is just about the cutest thing ever! He also gives "high fives", which basically consist of him putting his hand into mine when I say "high five, Holdie!"... his little face just lights up! I can't believe he is almost 9 months!
I am biased, of course, but he is just so observant and smart. When we are in stores and people talk to him, he just looks at them so intently, like he's trying to figure them out. He doesn't give up his smiles very easily! He can also give hugs and kisses. :) His version of kisses, of course, are mouth-wide-open, slobber on the face type kisses!
Tomorrow Alex's four day begins, so we will be going to Target to buy him an Easter outfit! Grandma Kim wants him to look cute for church, so she said she would spot us for it! :) Can't wait!

Need to Update!
I have a few videos that I have been procrastinating on posting. They are too cute, so please be patient. They're actually on my husbands PC waiting to be uploaded by me. (Ha, ha)
In the meantime, check out Holden's homemade Easter basket!

1st Birthday Theme.

OK, so I know it's still a good 6 months away, but being the neurotic planner I sometimes (OK, alot of times) am, I have been fantasizing about how cool Holden's 1st birthday is going to be.
I have gone through tons of themes, asked opinions and fretted my little head about what theme I should use for Holden's birthday. I guess the sensible thing to do would be to wait and see if he's "into" any toys, characters, or colors specifically before I go all balls to the wall about it.

Buuuut I came across this theme that is just way too graphically endearing. It beckons me with it's sweetly simple design and playful pastels. Just my style. They are available to order, (or will be after February) online but what kind of graphic designer would I be if I didn't at least attempt to make the decor myself?
A little inspiration, some car stencils and an eye for color will make my version applicable to my baby boy's ONEderful birthday. (See what I did there?)
I'm thinking of changing up the color scheme. Like maybe adding orange instead of a green accent, or a combo of red and yellow.
So very excited!
Oh, and an awesome idea for all of your empty baby food jars: tie burlap on the lid with a colorful string and fill them with candy for party favors!

Swimming
Today Holden had his very first swimming pool experience!
The family pool was closed, so we opted to try out the lap pool. We were a little worried that it would be too cold for him, but at 83 degrees, it was perfect! He seemed to love it!
I'm sure he probably thought something along the lines of "Wow, what a huge bathtub!"
Alex and I and little man swam for about an hour. His little swim trunks were adorable. I wish I would have taken photos... I'm awful about it! I vow to get better at that, I promise!
The lifeguard was super friendly and offered to get us a baby raft to put him in. He lounged in it between playing with mommy and daddy. So cute.
Next time, we will have to try out the very cool family pool. It has a zero foot entry, a slide, and pretty cool water cannons!

Heavy Weight!
I forgot to mention Holden's weight. He weighs about 18.9 pounds as of last Monday, but I swear he has gained 5 pounds since then. I still carry him around for a good chunk of the day and all I've got to say is, I better have some muscle when he starts walking!
Either way, he is our healthy little munchkin!
I think he is also going to have my hair color. It is much lighter than Alex's now. When he was born we thought for sure he would have dark hair, but now I'm beginning to see some red in there! We'll see!

Remote-Controlled Kitty
We've found another winner!
We have owned what we like to call a "kitty remote" for about a year now. In layman's terms, it is called a laser pointer. It also happens to be shaped like a mouse. Porter will chase it around the house for hours. He gets so excited, in fact, that he makes chirping noises and his tail twitches so fast that I fear it will fall off.
Yesterday, while I was teasing the cat, making him run in circles, jump up walls and the like, Alex was holding Holden in the hallway. Our ever-observant son noticed these "kitty shenanigans" and boy, was it funny! I know I said in the previous post that I have never seen him laugh so hard... but this truly trumped the Johnny Jump-Up. Truly.
Holden was laughing so hard I had to stop to make sure that he was still laughing and not crying. So. Damn. Cute. There is just nothing like a little baby's laugh. It is truly heart-warming.
I wish I had a video of this! Next time. Next time.
6 month check-up
It went.... well, of course... until he got his shots. He bawled for a while, I just couldn't calm him down this time. So, I reluctantly put him in his carrier and headed out to the car. He was OK until I put him in his big seat. And then again until I took him out to get in the house. Poor, poor baby. But, he had no reaction this time, and after a long nap, he was great! Our new pediatrician was fabulous and even gave him a book!
The nurse said that if he isn't sitting up by the time he's almost 7 months, they might "look into it". I'm trying not to worry about that part- I know babies take their own sweet time.
Also, I didn't mention this before, but Alex's parents purchased a convertible carseat, the Britax Boulevard, for our Christmas present. I absolutely adore it. The cover is gorgeous, looks great with my interior, and it comes off to be washed! The seat itself is comfy and roomy, and can be used up to I think 60 lbs! I know Britax is one of the more expensive brands, but I think they are totally worth it!
And, I took Holden to my mom's work so that I could get my teeth cleaned. Everyone thought he was just adorable! Look out, he really is a ladies man!

Hi-larious.
Anyone who has met Holden knows that he doesn't give up his giggles too easily. You've gotta work for it! Certain things will make him laugh before they get old. Fortunately, I've been able to stay creative enough to keep my baby boy entertained.
The latest: jumping. I don't think he has ever seen anyone jump up and down before. Ever. So the other day, I put him in his Johnny Jump-Up to see if he'd bounce a little. He doesn't get the concept yet, so I decided to give him a little encouragement. Holden's reaction? Funniest. Thing. Ever. Don't think I've ever seen him laugh so much. Hardy laughter ensued for a whole 5 minutes before he decided he didn't quite like being in there for too long. It is pretty big for him still.
We go in tomorrow for his 6 month vaccinations. I'm not looking forward to it. At least after tomorrow we don't have to do it again for another 6 months. Poor baby!
Also, I don't think I've mentioned it since shortly after he was born, but his umbilical hernia is practically gone! Our little man is getting an inny! Will post pics of it soon. For now, here are a few recent photos. Enjoy!

Almost 6 Months Old!
Dear baby boy,
You are growing up so fast! In just 5 days, you will be six months old! You are growing a tooth! (Grandma says it is #24) You have tried all sorts of new foods and have loved them all! Including bananas, applesauce, oatmeal, rice cereal, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash!
You are almost 20lbs! Every baby I have seen that is close to your age is a lot smaller than you! Maybe you will be tall like your uncles Jordan and Matt.
You are sleeping now! You are doing so well at sleeping longer now. Mommy feels better after she gets more sleep!
I love you very much boo boo and am so very proud of you!
Your daddy and I have given you a ton of nicknames, some of which are:
Boo boo
Holdie
Mister
Mister Man
Buhbuh
Piglet (not so much anymore!)
And many more to come I'm sure!
I have been working with you trying to get you to sit up. You are doing really well! Still pretty wobbly, but you'll get it soon!
Love you lots and lots and lots,
Mama
